Americans’ interest in raw foods — for pets and humans — has surged, fueled by a growing distrust in highly processed foods and chemical additives. Infectious disease experts, however, say the trend goes too far, since it abandons tried-and-true safety steps — including heating milk and cooking meats — that kill dangerous viruses and bacteria.
In the era of bird flu, they say raw milk and raw pet food are bringing a dangerous virus with pandemic potential too close to people and pets.
