Work on the eastern tip of Madison’s “Triangle” has been completed, but a much more ambitious redevelopment of the bulk of the expansive Downtown neighborhood overlooking Monona Bay is about to get underway.
Madison’s Community Development Authority, which owns 336 housing units on about 10.5 acres between West Washington Avenue and South Park Street, across the street from Brittingham Park, is planning a more than $300 million overhaul of the properties beginning this spring and lasting over the next decade or so.
The $71 million initial stage includes a five-story apartment building that will rise on vacant land in the middle of the block — which will eventually house the current residents of Brittingham Apartments — along with installation of a geothermal heating system and various improvements to other parts of the Triangle.
