Zylstra proposed that current commissioners Roger Belknap and Gretchen Cosby be removed from the parks board and MACC, respectively, and that Kleinjans be appointed to replace them.
Both Belknap and Cosby are part of the conservative platform Ottawa Impact, which gained a majority on the board after the 2022 elections.
Commissioners voted 7-3 Tuesday against Zylstra’s proposal, with Commissioner Kendra Wenzel absent.
Before the vote, Commissioner Roger Bergman suggested that the board “owed” Kleinjans a chance at more service opportunities. He noted that, in 2023, all commissioners were allowed to serve on standing committees that include Health and Human Services, Finance and Administration, Planning and Policy and Talent and Recruitment.
But Commissioner Sylvia Rhodea quickly addressed Bergman.
“I would just say we don’t actually owe Commissioner Kleinjans anything,” she said. “He was not elected at the same time as the rest of this board. That was a unique circumstance where we had multiple (new) commissioners coming in.”
