BIrd flu kills 1000 crested terns in South Australia

Headline: Streamline, 8/20/2026
South Australian authorities are scrambling to contain a catastrophic ecological event after more than 1,000 native seabirds were found dead across remote island colonies. Premier Peter Malinauskas has declared a "significant escalation" of the H5 avian influenza outbreak, placing the nation's agricultural and wildlife sectors on high alert.
The mass mortality events represent the deadliest localized impact since the highly pathogenic strain arrived on the Australian mainland in June 2026. While commercial poultry flocks remain untouched, the rapid spread through wild populations threatens vulnerable ecosystems and demands immediate biosecurity fortification.
