Australia reports first mammal death from bird flu

Australia has confirmed its first mammal casualty from the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus, in what marks a turning point. A long nosed fur seal in South Australia, passed away today with no visible signs of injury. 

The seal, one of an estimated population of 100,000 in the state's waters, was found dead in the coastal town of Beachport, located about 310 kilometres away from provincial capital Adelaide. According to the federal government’s agriculture minister Julie Collins, the death of the seal "does not appear to be associated with other sick or ​dead marine mammals," . She added that “Once the H5 ‌bird flu ⁠is spreading in the natural environment it is not possible to avoid significant losses."
