South Dakota confirmed its second highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak in August 2026, affecting a commercial breeder operation with 29,700 birds in Edmunds County on August 21, marking the 11th commercial poultry flock impacted by HPAI in the state this year. 

• A commercial breeder operation in Edmunds County, South Dakota was confirmed with HPAI on August 21, 2026, affecting 29,700 birds. 

• This is the second HPAI outbreak in South Dakota within nine days, following a case that killed 74,900 commercial meat turkeys in Beadle County. 

• South Dakota has now experienced 11 confirmed commercial poultry flock cases of HPAI in 2026, with one additional backyard flock case. 

• The last previous commercial case in the US occurred on July 13 in Cache County, Utah, affecting 275,100 table egg layer pullets. 

• Backyard flock infections do not impact international poultry trade under World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) rules.
