U.S. 40 Cross Section of the United States of America (Chapter 42: Kansas Corn)

That was then (1953).

From chapter 42:
The words of the songm "As corny as Kansas in August," are well demonstrated here, but -- to be wholly correct -- the picture was taken in September.  Except for a single field, everything that is cultivated is in corn.

The question may be raised why the highway, in open level country and with no apparent reason, suddenly swings across the railroad.   In this particular instance the crossing is not without its reason.  A few milse farther on, the railroad runs very close to the river, and the highway would have been crowded out.  (The location is not specified.)
This is now.  (Best approximate railroad crossing location.  About 6 miles west of Abilene.)
