That was then (1953).
From chapter 46:
Hays, Kansas, began as Fort Hays, frontier military post. It shifted to being Hays City, railhead of the sixties, tough cattle town of the seventies. Now it is quiet and peaceful, and U.S. 40 runs east and west along its shaded 8th Street.
This is now. (Tree-shaded 8th Street was lined with elms 70 years ago. And I imagine the street has been widened since then.)
Google Maps
Fort Hays is 270 miles west of Kansas City.
The population of Hays has more than doubled since George R. Stewart's visit.
