U.S. 40 Cross Section of the United States of America (Chapter 37: Double Highway)

That was then (1953).

From chapter 37:
In flat country, the photographer must always seek some elevated point in which to obtain an adequate view of the highway -- a tall building, even an overpass.  Here a water tower provides the point of vantage.
The direction of the viewis a littsle toward the southwest, about a dozen miles east of the Kansas border, and somewhat farther from the outskirts of Kansas City, which is a little outside the field of the picture, to the right.
This is now.  The area about a dozen miles east of the Kansas border is now a suburban sprawl.  No sign of a water tower.
