A picture from the highway-level emphasizes things near at hand. The grass by the roadside and the highway signs assume importance. Farther away, in flat country, one sees only those things that themselves reach up above the general height -- the telephone- and power-poles and, particularly, the four grain elevators.

Grainfield is 330 miles west of Kansas City. Its population was 370 when George R. Stewart passed through in the early 1950. It is 322 today.
