Wisconsin embarrassment and virulent nativist Tom Tiffany is at it again

WisPolitics, 12/11/2024

From this execrable human being's press release.  (Note the use of the word 'scheme'.)
Today, Congressman Tom Tiffany (WI-07) sent a letter to Bojana Zoric Martinez, the Director of the Bureau of Refugee Programs for the Evers administration, calling for transparency and opportunities for public input on reported plans to resettle refugees from Afghanistan and Ukraine in Marathon County between now and January 20th – the day President-elect Trump will be sworn into office. This comes after constituents expressed concerns to Rep. Tiffany about the significant refugee resettlement scheme underway.

December marks three years since the first refugee families arrived in Wausau as part of the establishment of a formal refugee resettlement agency office. As America prepares for another Trump Presidential Administration questions about immigration have circulated, like what are the differences between a refugee, asylum seeker, migrant, and immigrant?
[snip]
A refugee is someone who cannot live in their home country or territory (in the case of stateless ethnic groups like Hmong or Rohingya) because of a legitimate fear of persecution based on their race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. Asylees perceive the same threat. People who have refugee status have gone through layers of vetting from agencies like the National Counterterrorism Center, Department of Defense, FBI, Department of Homeland Security, Department of State, and intelligence agencies to screen for security threats and past actions.
Unlike asylees, this process happens in a secondary country, often in a refugee settlement. It typically takes a couple of years, though some wait decades. These individuals are legally allowed to be in the US and work in America. In fact, it is part of the resettlement process to help refugees become self-sufficient. By their one-year mark in the US, they need to get a green card to apply for permanent residency. Refugees can apply for citizenship once eligible, but it is a longer process.
