Intro to chapter 19:
An excellent marker supplied by the state of Pennsylvania declares this to be "One of the six original toll houses on the National Road. It was built by the State after the road was turned over to it by the U.S. in 1835. The road was completed through this section nin 1817-1818.
In a later paragraph the author notes that...
There have been some attempts at preservation -- observe the new roof on the tower -- but the building is in danger of falling to pieces.
This is now. Searights Tollhouse is one of two of the surviving originals.
Searights Tollhouse is 50 miles south of Pittsburgh.
