UPDATE: Visualing the original Madison Public Library on West Mifflin Street

From Retiring Guy's postcard collection
Original 4/4/2009 post, "Visualing a new Madison Public Library", starts here.
"What would a remodeled Central Library look like?"  (Capital Times, 4/3/2009)
So, I was at this meeting last week and was fascinated by Hammel, Green and Abrahamson's presentation on what could be done with the Central Library in terms of remodeling it.  I noticed Chris Rickert was there for the State Journal, so I saved writing about this untiol I could procure some of the visuals that HGA provided -- it's one thing to try to describe a rooftop expansion, but it's quite another to be able to show you exactly what I saw and let you see directly what $10 to $14 million can buy for the Central Library.

2015 City of Appleton Budget Includes $5 Million for Land Acquisition and Architectural Plans

Funding for Appleton library survives council scrutiny.  (Appleton Post-Crescent, 11/12/2014)

Another small step forward.
The approval doesn't mean the proposed $37 million library will be built on a downtown bluff overlooking the Fox River. Rather, it allows the city to continue the process, defined by statute, to acquire the site from Fox Banquets and Trinity Lutheran Church.

"We're not going to (forcibly) take the property," Hanna said. "It has to be a negotiated transaction."

From a few weeks ago.

Thanks to a Major Donation, the Marshfield Public Library Will Become the Everett Roehl Memorial Public Library

Roehl donation allows for work to start on new library. (Marshfield News Herald, 10/29/2014)
In a press release issued by the committee about the donation Roehl said, “I think this project is very worthwhile for the city, and I am happy to be a part of making it happen.”

Roehl Transport Inc. has become one of the nation’s 100 largest truck companies.

“Mr. Roehl recognizes the important contribution of the library and community center to the community, and he wanted to support it,” Hocking said. “This was an opportunity for him to give back to the community that has been very supportive of his business and family.”

The library and community center project is a collaboration between the library and the city, with the city contributing $3 million to the project. The first phase of the project will cost a total of $7 million.

An additional $2 million will be sought in the second phase of fundraising.

Space Needs and the Indianapolis Public Library's Strategic Plan

Indy Library Plan Reflects National Report on Libraries' Future.  (Indianapolis Public Library, 10/21/2014)
A key component [Goal 4:  Maximize accessibility to the Library and its services] calls for better access to Library services in large unserved population areas of Marion County with the addition of several new or renovated branch locations. New or relocated branches are planned for Perry Township, the City of Lawrence, the North Michigan Road and West 38th Street corridors, and the Glendale and Brightwood areas. Renovations to modernize service capabilities are planned at the East Washington, Lawrence, Southport, Wayne and Warren branches, facilities constructed in the 1970s and '80s, except for the East Washington Branch, an original Carnegie Library built in 1909 that is not ADA accessible.
Separate bond issues totaling $58 million currently are being considered by the Indianapolis-Marion County City-County Council. The bond issues would be structured so that tax rates would not be increased for the Library.

A local television station report on the plan for new and renovated branches.

The opening 0:26.
At a time when digital books are available in an instant, you might think public libraries are on the way out. But in Indianapolis at least, think again.  Not only are you using local library branches, there's actually a plan to upgrade and expand some of them.  Of course, that plan comes at a cost -- tens of millions of dollars -- but as I found out, those making the proposal say they can get it done without asking you for more tax money.

Consultant Presents Fundraising Report to Appleton Public Library Board

$7M in private fundraising expected for library. (Appleton Post-Crescent, 9/17/2014)

Tapping into the Fox Cities strong philanthropic culture.
A Friends of Appleton Public Library consultant from Minnesota told the city's library board that in-person meetings with 28 people indicated the contribution target.
"Unilaterally, the library is viewed as a highly valued asset of the community," said Karen Rose, a consultant with St. Paul-based Library Strategies. "A surprise was that most of the people we interviewed regularly use the library. In many communities donors have the civic perspective, but not the personal tie."
The consultant sent private meeting invitations to 78 targeted donors and asked about their range of giving.

Half of Respondents to Unscientific Poll Consider Themselves Cheapskates

I refuse to use the adjective "Appleton-area" since I was able to vote in this silly poll.

To the disconnected 50% who say "No way!"

If only.

New library may raise library taxes

Q&A
Appleton residents asking, "Will this raise my taxes?"
The answer? Probably, but not much.

The Tug-of-War Over a New Appleton Public Library Continues

Public divided on new Appleton library plans. (Appleton Post-Cresent, 9/9/2014)

Was there an attachment with this letter?  A small coalition of city residents and developers sent Hanna and the council a letter late last month questioning the plans and calling for a reopening of bids to overhaul the current 1981-era site on Oneida Street.

The group said renovating the library would cost about $17 million, lower than estimates from the city-paid consultants.

Rortvedt said overhauling the existing library would cost about $35 million, a figure that includes expansion, renovation and acquisition of a parking lot — along with 18 months of leasing space during construction.
