Excerpt: "The need to do something about the Central Library has become increasingly urgent."
We agree. The urgent need for a new Central Library is evident to anyone who has visited the current facility.
The proposal that has been put forward is practically and aesthetically outstanding. Evidence from other communities suggests that building a new Central Library will yield benefits for downtown Madison that extend far beyond the new building's walls.
And we would add that, in a city that takes seriously the maintenance of the broad information infrastructure that sustains civil and democratic discourse, attractive and welcoming libraries are essential institutions. (RG's emphasis)
