An Informed, Engaged Indianapolis Will Find the Resources for Its Public Library

If we value education, give library what it needs, letter to the editor by Tom Shevlot, president of the Indianapolis-Marion County Library Board.  (Indianapolis Star, 7/4/2011)

Excerpt:  At a time when the economy is struggling, and income and property tax receipts are down, many may think now is not the time for us to be asking for financial assistance. To those people I would say that the library has made meaningful, perhaps painful, cuts to our operation. We have made the decisions required to make our request for funds meaningful. Without a healthy, robust library system, Indianapolis would suffer tremendous harm to its quality of life and educational foundation.

We have seen this declining spiral occur in other communities. This is not what we want in Indianapolis. If we are a city of informed, engaged citizens who value education and self-improvement, we are a city that will find the resources to support its public library
