Nick El Hajj reports on August 14th:
Nitrates in the two rivers during the past few months rose to levels that far exceeded the EPA's own 10 milligrams per liter limit for processed drinking water. That prompted Central Iowa Water Works, the regional authority of which Des Moines Water Works is the largest member, to issue an unprecedented ban on lawn watering in a bid to maintain enough treatment capacity to ensure sufficient safe water for essential uses, such as drinking, bathing and cooking. The ban has since been lifted.
“The impairment of the Raccoon and Des Moines rivers threatens our mission and ability to safely providing drinking water on behalf of the region to 600,000 central Iowans,” Amy Kahler, Des Moines Water Works’ CEO and general manager, said in the news release. “This reversal does not align with the operational and financial realities we are experiencing from a boots-on-the-ground view. It is becoming increasingly difficult to treat source water with the high concentrations of nitrate we are seeing.”  [emphasis added]
