Tuesday's LGBTQ Day on the Hill comes less than two weeks after Gov. Kim Reynolds signed into law a bill removing gender identity as a protected class from the Iowa Civil Rights Act, the law that shields Iowans from discrimination in education, housing, employment, credit practices and public accommodations.
After signing the bill, Reynolds posted a video saying: "It's common sense to acknowledge the obvious biological differences between men and women. In fact, it's necessary to secure genuine equal protection for women and girls."
The new law ends 18 years of protection against discrimination for transgender Iowans and makes Iowa the first state in the nation to take away rights from a group it had previously protected. [dishonor emphasis added]
