Local governments in Iowa may be barred from setting their own policies protecting trans and nonbinary people from discrimination under a bill Gov. Kim Reynolds has proposed.
Statehouse Republicans are eyeing an expansion of the state's recent law removing gender identity as a protected class in the Iowa Civil Rights Act under Reynolds' measure, House Study Bill 664, which was unveiled Wednesday, Feb. 4.
The bill would bar communities from adopting their own civil rights policies protecting different classes than state law covers.
