Steve Scalise ha won his fast four elections by an average of nearly 50 percentage points.
Cassidy, R-Baton Rouge, and Scalise served together in the Louisiana Legislature and again in the U.S. House.
As a U.S. senator, Cassidy was one of the few Republicans who voted to convict President Donald Trump of impeachment charges stemming from the January 6th riot by MAGA supporters at the U.S. Capitol.
Scalise did not. Cassidy has since rallied to Trump’s causes but his impeachment vote still rankles conservative Republicans in a state that three times backed the president with overwhelming majorities.
