Avian influenza, also known as bird flu, has been identified in a "small backyard flock of birds" in Monroe County, according to the health department.
The health department says no human illness has been identified and everyone potentially exposed to the birds has been contacted. According to the health department, it's the first case of the virus in the county since the state's first detection in 2022.
“We want to share this information to alert residents who own or work with birds, including poultry, to the possibility of infection and to take necessary precautions,” Jamie Dean, health officer, director at the Monroe County Health Department. “Keeping the public informed, safe, and healthy is our top priority.”
