U.S. 40 Cross Section of the United States of America (Chapter 11: Horrible Example)

That was then (1953)

Intro to chapter 11:
The westward-traveling motorist, turning sharply to the right as he leaves the village of Funkstown, then swerving again, crosses the old bridge over sluggish Antietam Creek.  Both road and bridge are reminders of old Maryland.

This is now.

Notes from "The Hungry City" by Joseph L. Heffernan (Atlantic Monthly, May 1932)

Business and government leaders have refused to admit seriousness of depression.  Don't talk about it, things will be back to normal tomorrow.

Even as distress and dislocation increase, relief measures (the "dole") cannot be agreed upon.

Being one of the centers of the steel industry, Youngstown has been hit particularly hard.

Efforts by the Communists to whip up a proletarian unity are met with apathy.

Memorial Day rally, 1931, clash with police.

In the fall of 1931, a bank panic gripped the city, fanned by wild rumors.  Years of false promises and hollow reassurances made people fearful and resentful.

Humiliation and degeneration experienced by many who accepted public welfare after all personal assets had been wiped out.

A large influx of visitors who were tuning into several high-stakes local races during the Tuesday, Aug. 6 primary election caused a West Michigan county clerk’s website to crash as people were eagerly waiting for results on Election Night.
The Ottawa County Clerk’s Office election results webpage was down for more than an hour after the site crashed around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday, leaving visitors unable to see anything on the website as preliminary results were coming in.
