North Dakota and South Dakota have confirmed new cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) affecting commercial poultry flocks, with North Dakota reporting its first fall case in a turkey flock and South Dakota now dealing with its fourth affected flock of the season. 

• North Dakota confirmed HPAI in a 41,600-bird commercial turkey flock in Lamoure County on September 4, marking the first fall case in the state. 

• South Dakota has been hit with four confirmed HPAI cases this fall, including operations in Edmunds, Hamlin, and Beadle counties affecting over 179,000 birds total. 

• The latest South Dakota case involved 30,200 birds in a commercial breeder operation confirmed September 4. 

• Minnesota also reported a commercial turkey flock with HPAI on September 1, affecting 29,800 birds. 

• North Dakota's previous HPAI case was in April 2026, making the September outbreak a significant return of the virus to commercial poultry operations.
