More than 7,600 Mulard ducks have been culled after an outbreak of H5N1 bird flu was detected on a farm in western France.
The latest outbreak is another blow to France’s foie gras industry, which saw prices spike in 2023 after 35 million forced-fed fowl were culled in the 2022-2023 season after a similar outbreak.
The industry also faces mounting pressure from animal rights activists over claims of animal cruelty.
At least 15 French towns and cities – including Bordeaux, Lyon, Montpellier, and Pessac – have banned foie gras from being served at official government receptions and publicly funded events over animal welfare concerns.
