Dallas County, located just west of Des Moines, remained a rural county throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. From 1920 to 1970, its population hovered in the 23,000-26,000 range. It even lost residents during1930s and 1940s. Now it's Iowa's fastest-growing county due to its proximity to Des Moines.
