Excerpt: “We had a great partner in Rutgers-Camden Chancellor, Wendell Pritchett, and great support from Camden Mayor Dana Redd. Ed McDonnell, Deputy Director of the Camden County Freeholder Board and I worked for more than 100 hours with Chancellor Pritchett and Vice Chairman Larry Gaines on creating a concept that would become a national model, and totally unique in the tri-state area,” Leonard said. “Linda Devlin, Director of the Camden County Library System, added her expertise to the plan and led a talented team that transformed a 5,000-square-foot space into a state-of-the-art library that serves everyone from toddlers to high school and college students, job seekers and seniors.”

Viroqua Center, Viroqua Library Update

Viroqua schedules meetings to consider plans for library, Viroqua Center. (Vernon County Broadcaster, 4/13/2012)

Excerpt:   The McIntosh Memorial Library has had a task force working since 2010 on plans for a new library. Through that process, a plan for the Viroqua Center was developed. It is a $5-8 million complex proposed to be built in partnership with Western Technical College-Viroqua campus and other partners in downtown Viroqua. It is yet to be determined what role the city will play in either the construction of a new library, or as a partner of the Viroqua Center. 

The library's task force worked until December when it reached the point at which it needed further approval from the city. 

In February, the city council met and said the task force had gone as far as it could under the May 2010 resolution. 

"I want to caution everyone about signing contracts and hiring companies and applying for grants under the name of the Viroqua Center," Alderman Terry Noble said at the meeting. "There is no approved Viroqua Center by this council... We have to decide in principle whether that's what we want to do -- have the library as a self-standing entity or with it as part of a Viroqua Center project." 

The only meeting the city has held regarding the library project since then was a March 6 meeting of the finance/personnel committee in which the library project was talked about in closed session under the meeting exemption of purchasing public properties or investing public funds. 

In an e-mail to the Broadcaster on Friday, Noble said, "The library and city are no longer looking at the other portions of the 'Viroqua Center' as part of the library project."
