Sarah Edgecomb reports:
Democratic state Sen. Sean McCann has defeated longtime Republican Rep. Bill Huizenga in Michigan's 4th Congressional District, marking another upset in the midterms.
This would have been Huizenga's ninth term representing the district.
McCann, a former Kalamazoo city commissioner and state representative, won the Democratic primary with about two-thirds of the vote over Diop Harris II, a Battle Creek native and former Capitol Hill staffer.
“This victory belongs to the people all across Southwest Michigan, and it’s the people that I will work every day to serve – to take on the corruption and policies shortchanging our families, and work with anyone to make life better and protect the American Dream for our children. Michigan families deserve nothing less, and I look forward to getting right to work for the people of this district,” McCann said in a statement declaring victory.
The district covers all of Allegan and Van Buren counties and parts of Ottawa, Kalamazoo, Calhoun and Berrien.
