Highly pathogenic avian influenza has infected three commercial poultry flocks in South Dakota during August 2024, marking a significant outbreak after the United States had gone nearly a month without commercial flock cases. 

• Three commercial flocks affected: 44,400 meat turkeys in Hamlin County (Aug. 27), 74,900 meat turkeys in Beadle County, and 29,700 birds in a breeder operation in Edmunds County 

• No other state reporting: South Dakota is the only state with confirmed HPAI cases in commercial poultry flocks in August 2024 

• Previous case: Last commercial flock infection before South Dakota was July 13 in Utah with 275,100 table-egg-laying pullets
