Merriam-Webster defines 'shoegaze' as melodic rock music typically characterized by heavily processed electric guitar and indistinct often distant-sounding vocals.

“Spirit of Eden” was released in 1988 and was a commercial flop, selling less than a quarter of what its predecessor did. But in the years since, the record has grown in stature, becoming a significant influence on the development of post-rock, shoegaze and slowcore, as well as an object of fascination for a range of artists including Radiohead, My Morning Jacket and St. Vincent.
"Slowcore" is not a word in Merriam-Webster's vocabulary. (See first-known use to understand why.)
