Dual crown for Ohio: Most layers and most cases of bird flu

In January 2025, Ohio led the U.S. in number of commercial layers at 39.9 million compared to 39.4 million in Iowa, 37 million in Indiana and 23 million in Pennsylvania. During the same month in 2024, Ohio housed 37.4 million layers, Iowa housed 40.9 million and Indiana had 34.4 million. 
In Ohio, 24.2 million layers have been depopulated since outbreaks began in 2022, according to the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection System (APHIS). In 2025, Ohio has had 13.7 million layers depopulated.
