The bird flu has come closer to the Des Moines metro, being detected in a small backyard flock in Dallas County, the Iowa Department of Agriculture announced Saturday. It's the fifth time bird flu has been detected in Iowa this year.
A highly pathogenic avian influenza infection was detected in a flock of 37 chickens and ducks. Iowa Department of Agriculture spokesperson Don McDowell declined to say where in the county — which includes rural areas and suburban cities on the western edge of the Des Moines metro — the flock was located.
The last known infection in Dallas County came in October 2022, also in a backyard flock.
