Headline: WATT Poultry, 3/7/2025
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is typically carried by migratory birds from Europe to Africa during the southern hemisphere winter. With winter fast approaching, warning of a looming crisis, the South African Poultry Association (SAPA) has stressed the urgency of action. It notes that three H5 vaccines are registered in the country but that too many obstacles exist to gain permission for their use on farm.
The Department of Agriculture, it says, has put in place overly stringent biosecurity protocols for vaccine use that have proved costly and impractical, and that no commercial farms in the country have been able to comply with.
