Barring of White Supremacist Group Leads Worcester Public Library to Review Meeting Room Policy
Library panel to examine meeting room use policy. (Worcester Telegram, 8/1/2011)
Excerpt: The Worcester Public Library’s Board of Trustees will examine its policy regarding the general public’s use of its meeting spaces.
The review comes in the wake of the board’s decision last month that barred a New Hampshire white supremacist group from meeting at the main library at Salem Square.
The trustees’ three-member Subcommittee on Materials will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. Aug. 24 at the downtown library to begin a review of current guidelines and regulations regarding the overall use of meeting rooms by individuals and organizations.
Two other hearings are planned.
Trustees rescinded a July 16 meeting room reservation for North East White Pride after learning of a video about the planned gathering that they thought might incite violence.
The video encouraged those attending to bring bike locks. During a June 4 meeting of the NEWP, a member was allegedly struck by a chain with a bicycle lock on it.
