GET ME REWRITE: Wisconsin GOP leadership throws transparency out the window

Headline:  Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 1/9/2026

Molly Beck Laura Schulte report:
Average members of the public are barred from recording their lawmakers in public hearings held at the Wisconsin State Capitol under new enforcement of a longstanding rule by Republican legislative leaders.
The rule governing filming of public business in the Capitol is not new but has not been widely enforced until now, when WisconsinEye, the state's version of C-SPAN, ceased operations.Average members of the public have previously not been barred from filming their lawmakers debating important issues in committee hearings, such as funding for programs in the state budget and the high-profile clashes in 2011 over the collective bargaining measure known as Act 10. A spokesman for Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said the new enforcement is "simply reaffirming the long-established rules of the Assembly" now that the WisconsinEye streaming service has stopped covering Capitol events."Credentialed media are still allowed to attend and record committee meetings. Committee meetings remain as transparent as ever as we continue to follow the long-standing practice of uploading the record of committee proceedings, all votes taken and all written testimony to the legislative website following the conclusion of the hearing," Luke Wolff, spokesman for Vos, said.
