GET ME REWRITE: As we boogie our way to autocracy, too many people are still freaking out over transgender youth

HeadlineDes Moines Register, 6/23/2025

Brianne Pfannenstiel and Marissa Payne report on the GOP's favorite distraction:
Conway said he appreciated Sand’s “unequivocable answer” because “it enables us to move on.”
“I think a lot of those social issues are really distractions from the pocketbook stuff that’s making Iowans hurt,” Sand said.
But moving on risks alienating base voters — particularly trans and queer Iowans — who are looking to the Democratic Party for support at a time when Republicans in the state have rolled back civil rights protections and unleashed a torrent of laws targeting the trans community.

The number of transgender student-athletes is even smaller, as not all transgender youth participate in sports.

Apparently, Iowa Republicans can't talk about anything else when it comes to campaigning.
