From "The Censorship Acceleration: An Analysis of Book Ban Trends After 2020"

It is clear that you cannot look at groups that are interested in banning books without zooming out to look at the many trends that are at play at this specific moment in history: the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of the parental rights movement, the racial reckoning of the summer of 2020 and the resulting educational backlash, and the rise of religious extremism and the reelection of Donald Trump. The rise in book banning and censorship attempts shown above is directly correlated with the simultaneous rise in the movement to privatize public schools through school vouchers, which, itself, is motivated by fringe EveryLibrary Institute 3 religious groups. In turn, these religious groups are backed by deep-pocketed billionaires who are interested in school vouchers as another way to grow their wealth. On the whole, there is broad interest in destabilizing public education to reach overt or covert political ends. To understand these forces, it is important to look back to 2020, a pivotal year that transformed so much of our national landscape.
