Amber Arnold reports:
Another big housing development could be coming soon to Madison’s fast-changing South Park Street, this one on the site of the Labor Temple, the city’s longtime home of organized labor.
For decades, the Labor Temple at 1602 S. Park St. has served as the hub for union organizing and was also known for its free outdoor events. But now, the 3.3-acre property is about to go on the market for a list price of $7.9 million.
“What’s happened to the Labor Temple is what’s happened to the labor movement in Madison,” said David Poklinkoski, vice president of the Madison Labor Temple Association. “We’re just treading water financially.”
Unions’ needs have changed since the two-story building opened in 1958.
