GET ME REWRITE: Georgia grand jury recommends charges against crackpot election denier attorney with ties to Milwaukee billionaire’s boys club

HeadlineMilwaukee Journal Sentinel, 9/8/2023
The Fulton County, Georgia, special grand jury recommended charges be brought against 39 individuals — including Cleta Mitchell, a former partner with the Milwaukee-based Foley & Lardner firm and secretary of the Bradley Foundation — for their role in trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Georgia. President Joe Biden defeated Trump by about 11,000 votes in Georgia.

By contrast, the Bradley Foundation, which has poured hundreds of millions of dollars into building the national conservative political infrastructure, said it cannot be involved in politics because it's a nonprofit.

Based in Milwaukee, the group has long funded Republican causes from school vouchers to controversial “The Bell Curve” co-author Charles Murray — as well as arts activities that have led to a positive civic reputation. But the private, tax-exempt foundation is funding a number of groups tied to the Republican “Big Lie” that former President Donald Trump won the election because there was massive fraud.
On Bradley’s board of directors is one of The Big Lie’s foremost propagators, attorney Cleta Mitchell, who notoriously joined Trump on his phone call to pressure Georgia election officials into “finding” more than 11,000 votes to overturn that state’s results. Under the Freedom to Breathe Act, federal officials would be blocked from issuing orders that would require mask-wearing on airplanes, public transit, or in educational settings, according to the bill that was first shared with the Washington Examiner. That ban would extend to President Joe Biden and would also prevent officials from denying services to travelers or students if they refuse to wear a face covering.

“I’m an elector for Donald Trump from the Michigan Republican Party,” Meshawn Maddock said during a Dec. 16, 2020, interview on the right-wing, Lansing-based Steve Gruber Show. “I, along with the other 15 electors, were guided by legal minds – attorneys for our president, some very incredible constitutional attorneys – I’ve never in my whole life appreciated legal minds and attorneys before.”
“I can tell you that in the last few weeks, just some incredible minds,” continued Maddock. “And from what I understand, you know, you have the federal constitutional law, and then you have state statutes, and they’re two different things. So, what we did along with seven other states, really send in dueling electors, and that will be there before, you know, a federal constitutional attorney, and it’ll be before [former Vice President] Mike Pence and Congress to make that decision.”
