Tammy Ayer reports:
The first detection of avian influenza in cattle in Washington state has been confirmed at two dairy farms in Yakima County, the Yakima Health District reported Thursday.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture National Veterinary Services Laboratory and the Washington State Department of Agriculture confirmed the H5N1 detection, according to a news release from the health district. The health district is working with the two dairies to monitor and protect the health of people exposed to the infected cattle, it said. The dairies weren't identified.
Dairy cattle in 19 states have been infected since the outbreak began in March 2024, the release said.
