It all started here.
A name is a name is a name in most places, but not in this blue-collar suburb.
After 58 years in the shadow of the trouble-weary city across the border, some residents want to take the ''Detroit'' out of East Detroit.
They want to change the state map, the county map, the East Detroit Post Office and the East Detroit Fire Department, the East Detroit Bakery and the East Detroit Cab Company, the addresses of all 38,000 residents and the four ''Welcome to East Detroit'' signs at East Detroit's borders.
Proponents of changing the name say that even nominal association with Detroit has scared away developers and lowered property values and egos.
Incorporated as the village of Halfway in 1924 and reincorporated as the city of East Detroit in 1929 and in 1940, East Detroit changed its name to Eastpointe in 1992. It is located on the southern edge of Macomb County and borders the northeast corner of Detroit.
