Disappearing cities of the Mountain State: Fairmont, West Virginia

It all started here.

50th anniversary of the death of 78 miners at the Farmington No. 9 mine on 11.29.1968.  The explosions blasted a plume of smoke more than 150 feet high from No. 9’s mouth, captured in an iconic photo by then-Charleston Gazette photographer Lawrence Pierce. The explosions were so powerful a motel clerk reportedly felt them 12 miles away in Fairmont.

Fairmont's population peaked at 29,346 in 1950.  Its 2017 estimated population is 18,622 -- a drop of 10,742 (37%).

Incorporated as Middletown in 1820 and the Borough of Fairmont in 1843, the City of Fairmont, located on the Monongehela River, is the county seat of Marion County.  It is 91 miles south of Pittsburgh and 140 miles northwest of Charleston.
