GET ME REWRITE: Vulnerable Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks attempts to defend the indefensible

Headline:  Des Moines Register, 11/11/2025

Marissa Payne reports:
Rising health care costs were a concern for several who asked questions, and Miller-Meeks agreed “we need to bring the cost of health care down,” going on to criticize the Affordable Care Act over jeering from the audience. She said the 2010 policy has failed to bring down costs and has called the boosted Obamacare subsidies a “bailout” for insurance companies that don’t address the root cause of high costs.
In response, the crowd repeatedly shouted, “What’s the plan?”   [emphasis added]
She cited efforts to regulate pharmacy benefit managers, which are the third-party companies that negotiate medication prices between health insurance companies, drug manufacturers and pharmacies, and a provision in the "Big, Beautiful Bill" to expand access to health savings accounts for lower- and middle-income Americans so they can tailor health spending.
Marie Hummell, 67, from Eldon, said she was disappointed with Miller-Meeks' response to a question on cancer that didn't mention water quality issues as a potential root cause of Iowa's rising cancer rates. Hummell is receiving treatment for breast cancer and receives Medicare benefits.
