The cleanup will involve, as the mayor writes, “the removal of the remaining contaminated soils and demolishing the remaining concrete building slab, excavate and dispose of the remaining PCB and VOC impacted soils, demolish and abandon the utility tunnel below surface, and most importantly; import clean fill and topsoil for greenspace and granular fill for where the building/sidewalks will be!”
The mayor said this cleanup will be 100% funded by a $1,961,500 federal grant through the bipartisan infrastructure law that Manitowoc was awarded in May 2024.
The city will begin working with the contractor and work is expected to begin in March or April, depending on the weather. This will completely clean up a majority of the site.
