Career peek. Ms. Moore received a best supporting actress nomination for her role in the 1959 film “Imitation of Life,” in which she played opposite Lana Turner in a story about two single mothers, one black and one white. It was only the fifth time an African-American performer had been nominated for an Oscar.

My 5th grade teacher was named Juanita, though we, of course, always called her Mrs. Johnson. She had pock marks on her usually florid face from a childhood bout with scarlet fever.
