According to She Knows Baby Names, the meaning of the name Denise is: From the Latin Dionysos or Dionysus, referring to the Greek god of wine.
Denise had a pretty good run from 1952 (#33) until 1973 (#38). Its best years were 1955 and 1956 at #23.
According to Wikipedia. The head of children's programming at CBS, Fred Silverman, came up with the character's name from the syllables "doo-be-doo-be-doo" in Frank Sinatra's hit song "Strangers in the Night.
