In a letter to EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, Reps. Bryan Steil, Derrick Van Orden, Scott Fitzgerald, Glenn Grothman, Tom Tiffany and Tony Wied asked the agency to review available actions under the U.S.-Canada Air Quality Agreement to respond to repeated smoke events affecting the state. “Record-breaking wildfire smoke is inflicting real harm on Wisconsin families. We cannot allow this to continue,” the lawmakers wrote. “Canada must meet its clean air promise and prevent future wildfires from impacting Wisconsin families.”
The lawmakers said smoke from Canadian wildfires has pushed air quality in parts of Wisconsin to hazardous levels, with some readings topping 500 on the Air Quality Index. They said Milwaukee, Brown, Waukesha and Kenosha counties were among the areas hit hardest.
Some of that smoke is coming from neighboring Minnesota.
