Hit with stiff tariffs from President Donald Trump, China hasn’t bought American soybeans yet for the marketing year that began Sept. 1, typically the starting date for its largest purchases. China's reliance so far on South American growers is dragging down prices and profits for American farmers, U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley and Iowa Agriculture Secretary Mike Naig said during separate press events Wednesday, Sept. 17.
“Prices are not where we would like them to be,” said Naig, speaking in Des Moines after announcing $355,000 in grants to Iowa meat lockers. In addition to low prices, the costs to grow crops “continue to be high," he said.
