Rep. Bob Henderson, R-Sioux City, said he believes "referring to it as the Gulf of America is a better way of referring to it."
"It’s bordered by the United States and also Mexico," he said. "It’s not just totally in Mexico. So it just makes more sense to call it the Gulf of America because it’s bordered by North America and Central America."
The gulf, which borders the United States, Mexico and Cuba, covers about 615,000 square miles and has about 3,540 miles of shoreline.
It has been known as the Gulf of Mexico since at least the 1600s.
