Bruce Feldman reports:
It’s also easy to argue that Belichick as a college coach has been, at least to this point, the biggest flop in recent college football history. No one questions his acumen when it comes to Xs and Os. The problem — and it’s been an enormous one — is that he completely botched the most critical hire on his staff and torpedoed North Carolina football in the process.
Belichick’s first big move after getting the job was that he entrusted his general manager job to his old pal Michael Lombardi, naming him UNC’s GM after he took over in Chapel Hill. What’s followed has been a remarkable dumpster fire, and we actually only now may start to get a clearer picture of just how unwieldy this all may be. [underline added]

According to Merriam-Webster, the first known use of 'dumpster fire', as in an utterly calamitous or mismanaged situation or occurrence, occurred in 2006.

Other coinages from the same year include:
  1. birther
  2. bucket list
  3. crowdsourcing
  4. sizzle reel
  5. YouTuber

Glenn Thrush reports:

That Ms. Pirro, a former Westchester, N.Y., district attorney and Fox News personality was aiming much of her criticism not at Mr. Trump, but his interior secretary, Doug Burgum, who oversaw the issuance of a no-bid contract to renovate the pool, did not appear to matter much.
On Saturday morning, Mr. Trump dashed off a post on Truth Social that made clear he was unhappy with Ms. Pirro, a friend and ally since the 1980s.
“I disagree 100% with Jeanine Pirro,” Mr. Trump wrote.
“I don’t know what she was thinking? To me, it was a pure case of VANDALISM,” he wrote, adding, “There may have been some contractor difficulty, but the major damage was caused by VANDALS!”

Glutton for punishment: Trump hand puppet Jeanine Pirro humiliated again

Kevin Breuninger report:

U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro on Friday moved to dismiss an indictment charging U.S. Olympic canoeist David Hearn with vandalizing the Reflecting Pool of the Lincoln Memorial, writing in a court filing that damage to the pool’s sealant was the result of a “flawed installation.”
Pirro, in a court filing in D.C. Superior Court, said her office received information and evidence after the charges were filed that “significantly undermine the evidentiary basis for the indictment.”
Hearn had been charged with felony destruction of property in early July, with Pirro saying at a press conference that he “violently” ripped up part of the pool’s liner with his bare hands. [emphasis added]
