Reynolds is suing the Register to block the release of the four emails connected to a February public controversy involving her response to a claim boosted by Elon Musk, then a member of the Trump administration, that Lutheran Services is a "money-laundering operation."
Lutheran Services is a substantial private provider of social services in Iowa and elsewhere and has received government funding for some of its programs. Reynolds initially declined to answer questions about the claim during congressional testimony. She later said amid heated criticism that she "absolutely" did not believe the allegation, which Lutheran Services in Iowa has denied.
The Register requested records from Reynolds' office related to the controversy, but the governor withheld emails her office said were exchanged among her deputies concerning "media prep," arguing they are protected by executive privilege.
