U.S. Census Bureau's 2022 population estimates: Iowa's 52nd smallest county (Jefferson) has fewer residents than it did in 1870

 

Iowa has 99 counties.

Trump flippin' Jefferson County's population has decreased 12% since its 17,839 peak of 1870.

3rd-party candidates received 38.8% of vote in 1992, 30.5% of vote in 1996, 8.6% in 2016.  (Alabama segregationist George Wallace received 5.7% of the vote in 1968)

Another eastern Iowa county that voted Democratic from 1988 to 2008, then flipped for Trump in 2016.  Obama twice won the county by double digits:  20.1 percentage points in 2008 and 16 in 2012.   Both of Trump's wins were by small margins. (Note the county's penchant for third-party candidates.)
